Not Another Teen Movie...

This summer I had this fling...thing. I didn't really talk about it much because I figured it would last all of 2 months and I'd be a lonely bitty all over again. Especially since the person lives in South Carolina and I was clearly coming back to the DMV once August hit. I will admit that he made the summer much more bearable. And it's always been that way. I've known him since before I was born. His family and my family have been close for YEARS. When we were little everyone thought that we would get married. We actually had a fake wedding when I was in Kindergarten. When I was in middle school and the first few years of high school, whenever I would visit my down south fam he would ask his parents to drive 45 minutes everyday to my grandparents house until I left to go back home. We did random fun kid stuff always. There's about a hundred stories about how we either got into so much trouble that we would have to be separated for hours, or we did way too much and almost died. It was all good fun.

Towards senior year of high school and throughout college he told me countless times that he loved me. And of course I returned the statement because I tell all of my friends that. But it didn't occur to me that he meant it as more than a decent sentiment. "Quite predictable and cliche', Maisheda!" is what everyone kept telling me. But as much as I appreciated my old childhood friend's feelings towards me I've always been that person who held friendships higher than relationships. And just like the Lifetime Movie this sounds like, I didn't want to jeopardize that friendship. Besides, long distance? I wasn't really about that life.

But this summer....oh this summer. The stress of two non-fulfilling jobs, what felt like thousands of kids running around, family drama, and lack of cell phone service forced me to find any type of outlet available. And just like a knight on his white horse, he saved me from everything. There was no pressure and no expectations. And that was exactly what I needed with everything that was going on around me. It was nice having someone in a slightly romantic position in my life. (especially someone to buy me dinner once and a while.)

But summer down there ended, and ultimately I thought that meant the end of whatever that was. And I was much more hurt than I wanted anyone to think. The idea of an actual relationship with this person was looking very real. But all major decisions were in my court and like an idiot I decided to nip it before the attachment really started to take affect.

The rest of August passed and September came. And a "What if?" seemed to linger. But it didn't matter. I have no desire to spend anymore time in SC any time soon. And it's not like he has plans of uprooting and moving up north. Which means our window of opportunity was just that, a window. But then last friday came around and I recieved a facebook message saying that he bought a ticket to B-more and would be there in an hour. Woah was this really going to be an hour and a half romantic chick flick? Where the leading roles realize that no little thing such as distance could dare stop the unrequited lovers from being together?

If you haven't gathered by now....clearly it was far from that. But we did spend the weekend together, and it was really nice. Lots of eating, lots of chilling, lots of smiling and not much talk of mushy relationship things. And that was perfect. At this point in my life I just want someone who can be there. I need someone to figuratively save me from the everyday musings I am more than happy to escape. I don't need potent feelings of intimacy. I just need someone to make me smile when I stress myself out. And when we got to BWI airport and he gave me tight hug around the shoulders right before he was about to leave, I knew that even if I'm not ready to label what we are, that he is still willing to be that person.

Sex and The City (with none of the first)

Man, I really love New York. I need one if those shirts right now. But anywho, I was all up in the concrete jungle this weekend. I was visiting my bffffff, Ryan, who just recently moved up there for grad school. We were supposed to be submerged in a weekend of free muscial amusement atthe Afro-punk festival in Brooklyn, but of course it was cancelled because of that ho, Irene.

So the weekend went a little something like this;

First day:

  • Got off the megabus and was greeted by Ryan.
  • Got incredibly confused at this 3 story K-mart. Bought snacks to eat and pillows to sleep on.
  • Rode the subway to Ryan's place in Harlem. Got pissed that the subway doesn't have escalators like the DC metros.
  • Went on a full scale search for a liqour store like a crack fiend. Found it and decided that a $13 handle of rum and some lime flavored SoCo was gonna have to do.
  • Went back to the apartment and started drinking. Got on the subway and tipsy-ly sung any and every song that came to our head.
  • Walked to Washington Square Park and was indulged by a top notch pianist, a white girl dancing rhythm-lessly to a performance by the rhythm section, a guy and his guitar, a jazz band with a fly Alto sax player a half naked black man in the middle of a fountain and a white couple making love in the water.
  • We visited the NYU bookstore then walked around downtown. Ran into this miniature cupcake store, (spending all all the money on nastiness). Walked back to the megabus let-off to pick up our friend Marquis.
  • Get back to the apartment. Resumed sippin. Drunk emailed my summer fling that I wanted to be laying on the beach with him ( I must stop doing that) he replied that I should have saved my bus money for New York and visited him instead. I laughed out loud and went to sleep.

Next day:

  • Went early morning walking around Harlem before everything closed down because of the storm.
  • Stayed inside all day watching/singing songs from Disney movies.
  • Played the question game with Quis and Ryan.
  • Realized that I'm far from happy and tend to live my life for others. Discovered that relationships are for suckas and drinking Neurogasm can lead to mens inhibitions flying out the window.

On Sunday:

  • the effects of cabin fever were settling in.
  • I bought a box of blacks from the corner store. Smoked almost 2 and a half by myself on the fire escape.
  • had an allergic reaction to something that made me break out in hives. (rolls eyes)
  • went back to the corner store to buy a bag of ice. bought it then returned it because who needs ice with shots.
  • Still feelin the blacks, I almost threw the bottle of liquor on Ryan because he didn't want to take shots.
  • was unreasonably mad so I went on a 50min walk around the neighborhood looking for not only an open store at 11 pm, with ice, but also the ability to tell niggas that I'm pissed off and I don't trust them.
  • went back into the house, almost cried in the bathroom.
  • sucked it up, took 4 double shots of SoCo and next thing I know emotions went from 0 to 80 in 2.6 seconds.
  • Negroes got ignant drunk!
  • I hid the handle of rum from my friends, because drinking was turning from fun to reckless and babysitting was not apart of my weekend (or any other time) plans.
  • Had a kumbaya powwow were I realized that I love my friends and hate them at the very same time.
  • Smoked the rest of the black.
  • Watched the lion king, cried during the stampede and started thinking about how I have more trust issuses than Drake.
  • Got hella irratated, and went to sleep listening to The Weeknd.

Monday:

  • Had a playdate in Central Park.
  • Went to Grimaldi's Pizza and ate 2 very delish sausage/pepperoni/basil slices.
  • Waited in the longest line ever for the most yummy ice cream from the Shake Shack.
  • Got in a fake fight with Ryan.
  • Cried because I wanted a taxi to take us to the Megabus pick-up.....but with no money we ended up walking 40 min with a 30 pound duffle bag. -____-
  • Got to the bus and threw up on the wrong buses bathroom.
  • Hugged Ryan, Got on the bus with Quis
  • Put on my head phones, my sunglassess cried cause I missed NY already and fell asleep.
Overall the weekend was amazing and one of the best I've ever had, despite how emotional and what-not. And because you know I hardly never go a post without a song or video...this one sums up the weekend quite well...

"Yes"- Coldplay

Oh, and did I mention...

that this weekend is Lollapalooza in CHI-town. So many great acts but the one that I told myself I would not miss...the one that I told myself I was going to see no matter who tells me no, was my FAVORITE- Coldplay. I had tickets. I bought them the first week of June....But I had to sell them because I'll be owing Howard money until my children go to college probably. SMDH! This will have to suffice...(le sigh)...

(edit:Now that I've watched it, the performance was BRILLANT! It would have been a life changing experience I'm sure! Not to mention the TRIBUTE TO AMY WINEHOUSE! I swear I cried!!!!! And now i'm twice as mad about not being able to go. ugh! goodnight)

The Prelude

Ever felt like something BIG is about to happen? You aren't quite sure if it will be a good something or a bad something, but something is sure to happen. That's how I'm feeling right now. I'm about to head to Miami in T-minus 2 days and in the words of Kevin Hart..."It's about to go...DOWN!" I actually have a bunch to do until then. I want a care-free vacation. The complete opposite of spring break down there. I know I'm already messing up by making any standards for the trip. The motto, "If you don't go into a situation with expectations you won't ever be disappointed," needs to be on repeat in my mind. But like the optimistic shrewd I am. I have to keep hope alive.

Things to do before I leave:

  • attack these two guinea pigs that have grown above my eyes.
  • re-twist the front of my hair. (I really do appreciate the consistent growth my hair has been giving me since I've been natural, but it's unfortunately giving my Senegalese twist no justice!)
  • find a freakum dress for this Saturday night. While in Miami, "Do what the Miami-ens do!"
  • tell the...umm....boy..... that anything goes this weekend...#kanyeshrug
  • paint my toes
  • find clothes
  • wash clothes
  • pack clothes
  • cut some grass, pick some okra, wash some sheets or do anything where I'll be able to make some extra cash.
  • Buy some wedges/heels I can walk all day around South Beach in.
  • re-do the music on my cheap little mp3 player. Shall be filled with The Weeknd, Yezzy, Theophilius London, Childish Gambino, Coldplay, KING, Cee-lo, Michael Jackson, J*Davey and the HP7.2 soundtrack.
And speaking of music....I can hardly never write a post without adding/referencing something music related. I HATE reality tv. I ESPECIALLY despise competition style shows. So the fact that I haven't watched an episode of American Idol since Ruben Studdard won shouldn't come as a surprise. But if I had known that Miss Haley Reinhart was competing I would have watched every episode and voted every day untill I knew she was sure to win. I stumbled across her while I was trying to find the John Legend cover of "Rolling in the Deep." She performed it on this last season and I fell in love. When I say BEAST, I've never meant it more. Her voice reminds me of why I find so much good and comfort from music. Even though she only made it to the top 3 (which was straight up RIDICULOUS when you hear the winner and first runner-up's voices.) she deserved the title as "Americas idol". People say she didn't win because of the "growl" in her voice. I personally love the added touch of personality. Some think SHe lloks too much like Leona Lewis and sounds too much like Shakira. I think she looks and sounds better. Some say it's because she had too much soul or sounded "too black". I would have thought that would have helped her. Even so, I watched every performance she did throughout the season and then I had to download the studio versions of my favorites. Adele....eat your heart out!

Big Bang Theory

I don't know much about Rock Mafia, but I do know that his song is my jam! It has the potential to be a summer hit. Miss Miley Cyrus is playing the female lead in this video. It's funny to see how much she's grown-up since her roll as Hannah Montana. She is definitely too hot for Disney as of late. But she's not the only reason why I keep this video on repeat. The video concept is confusing yet cool, the lyrics and melody are bomb and the male lead is HOT!

THROWBACK THURSDAY

It's been a few weeks since I did a throwback thursday. Oh well...here's this weeks. Since I'm in South Carolina right now I thought it was a good idea to use a song that reminded me of my second home. Please don't ask me why songs like the ones by NEXT remind me of the S.C. It's really any song by a 90's group has me reminiscing. Maybe it's because when I was a youngy in the '90s, spending my summers down here, I would hear these songs blasting in the car to the beach or playing at the park during my family reunions. Whatever the reason, I love how this song reminds me of chidhood (LOL! even tho it was inappropriate...I know) and the summer =D

Oh life!

I love care-free music. I'm always down for some thought provoking-socially influential-conscious music, but now and again I do appreciate just music that makes you feel good. Especailly during the warmer weathers where you can twirl throught the grass and tap through rain puddles. Last summer my "go-to-feel-good" song was this here. This year it's a tune by French Starlet, Inna Modja. A beautiful women with a beautiful fro. This song reminds me of my old SClub7 days. Oh how I miss them...anyway, Inna also designs her own clothing and her pieces are absolutly gorgeous. She's going to be my summer idol for this year. Beautiful hair, beautiful style and a beautiful soul.
