The Abyss: Too Deep

I consider myself to be more than skin deep.

I, like the next person, appreciate something that stimulates my core. Something that allows my mind to tap into the Frontal Lobe of my Cerebrum. So I can utilize the parts of my brain that allows me to use my abstract thinking, problem solving and creative thoughts to get to an appropriate conclusion. Most times I’m usually the first of my colleagues, peeps and peers to understand that there is a hidden message or meaning behind something. I'm usually the one saying "Wow! That's Deep." and  “Oh, I get it,” more frequent than none.  Especially when it deals directly in the arts.

But this time I’m as Clueless as Cher Horowitz and Dionne Davenport in the 90’s.

My musical and lifestyle muse, Erykah Badu, has puzzled me deeply and I need to understand.  I don’t know how long I’ll be able to stand not knowing why she and band members of “The Flaming Lips”, decided to take this direction with this video. As an anti-slut-shaming promoter and a glitter enthusiast, I was down with the nudity and the glitter vomit (for lack of a better description). But someone has a whole lot of splainin’ to do (*Ricky voice*) for the rest of the vid. Let me just say that I can’t see my girl -and fellow Alum- Roberta Flack, thinking that her original song would be portrayed like this.

I won’t say anything else.

Just watch.

Sometimes I just feel like some artist are just too cool for me. Too deep for me. Too soulful for me. Too perfect for me. Example numero uno- Quadron. Get hip...and FAST. It's music for the soul.

Throwback Thursday!!!

It's been ages since I did a throwback Thursday. But I had to do this song. This is one of the first albums I remember my cousins and I bought. I decided to pop the tape (yes CASSETTE) into my stero last night and I forgot that "If You Love Me" was "accapella" on the Album. Dang...a time when vocals really mattered. So here is both versions. It's great that each can stand alone.

The Other Side of Love

Sometimes, even when you try really hard to deny/hide/suppress it, your feelings come as swiftly as the weather. Sometimes you need just one of those days to sulk in the underbelly of depression. Of course it does not do well to dwell in those unhappy moments but it's okay to visit them periodically. And today on this rainy spring afternoon I've decided to succumb to the emotions. But only for today. Tomorrow is Thursday which means a giant step towards the weekend, and everything will be on the up and up again. Until then. Here's my rainy day playlist for today.

yeah...she gives me life

I don't want to hear it. I know I have an unhealthy obsession love for female spittas. And since Nicki has left me underwhelmed since "Beam Me Up Scotty" (my love with her was short lived) and I ain't learned a Kimberly Denise lyric since The Lox's "Crush",  I'm on to the next one. And right now Iggy Azalea is my not so guilty pleasure. I really have no idea why I love her. But she satisfies my hoodrat criteria, exponentially, with out over doing it with the likes of Kreayshawn. Plus she's beautiful and I love beautiful women. Until she renacts a crucifixion/conception/exorcism at an award ceremony... we cool.

Lost & Found

LET ME TELL YA. I have never been more excited to see where music will lead someone until I found Lianne La Havas. The first time I heard her sing I literally said, "Where has this been ALL my life?" I'm telling you, the British have given us three great things; Idris Elba, Harry Potter and music. Amy, Corinne, Elton, Duffy, Joss, Shirley Bassey, Coldplay, Daniel, The Beatles and the list seems to never stop. Well add Lianne to the ever forming list because I can't get enough. If you do anything today PLEASE watch the first video below. Her cover of Rihanna's, Only Girl in the World, is perfection. Rih Rih I love your trashy ass but true vocalist will always prevail in my books. Her voice reminds me of a cool blend of Alice Smith, Joss Stone and Corinne Bailey Ray. And her folk meets soul sound gives me life. Please acclimate yourself with her, because when her album drops later this year, you don't want to miss out.

The Ultimate Put On Deux

A while ago I did a post called, "The Ultimate Put On," where I made a playlist of what music I was frequenting at the time. I decided to do another one. I originally wanted to do it quite frequently, especially since I'm always happily stumbling on some musical gems in my opinion. Unfortunately my little hp computer with it's Movie Maker made making the playlist something like HELL. But I have a new desktop and It worked out so much more smoothly than originally.

So here it is. A compilation playlist of some of the music that has stayed on repeat since at least the beginning of the year until now. It features songs that are recent, old, and hitting many genres. Most from artist you don't really hear on the radio. I hope you enjoy it and tell me what songs you have recently kept on repeat.

Oh and I added a downloadable version of the songs in the playlist if your interested in hearing/having the full versions.

Flowers for the Living 2012

[Disclaimer: My next few post will all be Valentine's Day related. Although (for yet another year) I have no one to "Be Mine", this year i'm taking time to show my love of self, others and the community. No sad, bitter-bittie syndrome over here!]

Last Valentine's Day I shared with you one of my favorite poets, Harold Green. Every year he does a 14-day series titled "Flowers for the Living". And like last year, each video is spoken word set to popular music...and more specifically songs with a theme of love. Of course we are on day 7 with seven more to go. So feel free to follow the series here.

And here are some of my favorite ones so far.

Damn these wild young hearts

This song right here is dedicated to the folk that I’ve said goodbye to over the last few months. I feel like I should be more upset, but I’m really not. It’s so surprising to me. It's evident that I'm definitely changing and evolving. I’m usually always emotionally drained when I part ways with people for whatever reason.  But I realize I have wayyy too much to worry about, to cry over spilled milk. Starting my career, making that money, changing the world and living my life all comes to mind! So right here I’ll insert a metaphorical pouring of a 40 over the graves of my lost friendships, acquaintances and “love”. Instead of listening to “It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye” I think the Noisettes will do.

Oh the places you will go!

The last 2 weeks have been ridic! I've decided to really work hard on my "Resolutions" this time around. And to get things started I decided to jump head first into traveling! It's what the 2nd or 3rd week of January and I've already been to Toronto, Hampton and New York. Not major-major adventures, but still notable movements none the less. I've also started my new job career related employment. I'm working for NAAM/ VH1's Save the Music Foundation. Yeah, son! Saving music programs in our schools. I'm hype for everything I can learn to hopefully start my own foundation in the near future. Also I get to do my new favorite thing...TRAVEL! What a great perk! I'm headed to Cali this weekend for a training conference so I can finally start learning what I'll be doing for the next 8 months.

Since I'm doing all this running around, I thought I'd leave you with a few joints from my current commuters playlist, I've dubbed the, "Chill Out and Ride" playlist. Hope you enjoy and hopefully will be able to take some of these tunes on your future travels. =D

("Halftime"- Amy Winehouse)

("Wandering Limbs"- Kimbra)

("Ritual Union"- Little Dragon)

("Dirty World"- MeShell Ndegeocello)

("Listen"- J*Davey)

("Turn the Lights Off/ PHD"- J*Davey)

("Sometimes"- Noisettes)

("Lady Brown"- Nujabes feat. Cise Starr)

Dear Rhi Rhi,

I'm feeling your racey/risque videos as of late. You help release my inner bad bitch, and I love it. You had me wanting to pop pills, tattoo possessive pronouns on my boyfriend's behind, dance on tables and run naked in my neighbor's fields.  I know people stay hatin on you but it's cool shawty. You've had my love since "Pon de Replay". Although I had to take a break from you during the "Rated R" days. At the time you were getting over a particular relationship and I was getting into one. I needed sappy love and you were giving me distressed suicidal. But now I'm back on board and we're riding easy. Keep the upgraded Christina Aguliera "Dirty", commin!

P.S I was always "Team Rhi Rhi".

hugs&kisses,
Shay-Shay
